method of a legacy

A stone is an odd image for a cigar, let alone life. However, there doesn’t seem to be anything less living than a stone! What does it mean to be a “living stone” for the Don Doroteo family? First, it means to be alive, to be full of life! And we pass that along to our community, through the fruits of our labor, and love for cigars. Second, it means that some of the better qualities of stone are to be ours.

A stone is firm, weighty, not easily moved, and able to withstand a heavy load. Stable and firm, we are also able to carry the weight and bear the difficulties imposed by this world. We are able to support and carry others in their time of need, sharing their burdens. Yes, living stones—strong, firm, not easily moved, and alive, quite alive!

Our work gives our lives meaning and a noble legacy. Since 1936, Don Doroteo’s dedication to the craftsmanship of specialty tobacco has sustained the oldest cigar company in the Dominican Republic. At the tender age of 16, Doroteo Fermin Delgado began his legacy for his descendants, his community and for the world. For over 86 years, his mastery of quality has endured with sophistication and simplicity.

Andullo is a method that imparts strength and flavor to tobacco. Andullo is created by taking cured tobacco leaves, wrapping them tightly in palm tree pods with rope, and hanging them to ferment for a period of two years. The process turns the tobacco into dark, hard logs resembling big sausages. Dominicans have smoked andullo as a pipe tobacco for more than 500 years.
